Domaine Piron's top cuvée is this Morgon Cote Du Py, and we can only agree. The vineyard stands on the remains of an ancient volcano, where special 400-million-year-old blue granite soils provide the exceptional foundation for Côte du Py's world-famous wines. Piron can trace its first winemaking ancestors in Morgon back to 1590—with a truly legendary terroir, the results are nothing short of exceptional.

The ideal climate for this Cote Du Py

The Piron family has been active in winemaking for 14 generations. The estate is located in Morgon and was founded in 1590 by Etienne Bailly. The Bailly and Piron families succeeded each other, and the winery is currently owned by Dominique Piron. Thanks to his expertise, he has built the region's worldwide reputation, and his quality wines have been well-known among wine lovers for years. The vineyards for this Cote Du Py are located in Morgon, on the hills of the commune of Villie Morgon. The climate is continental, which is very conducive to ripening the grapes. The vines are over 50 years old and are planted in small plots at an altitude of 200 to 300 meters. The soil is rotten rock and is rich in minerals such as iron oxide and slate. The grapes are harvested by hand and then placed in whole bunches in barrels. Thirty percent of the wine is aged in wooden barrels to acquire structure and roundness.

The scent and taste of Domaine Piron Morgon Cote Du Py

Piron's 2016 "Côte du Py" reveals a deep ruby red in the glass with magenta-pink hues radiating on the rim. Juicy plums on the nose, along with black cherries, blueberries, and red raspberries burst powerfully from the glass, followed by endless waves of crushed granite, scrubland, rose petals, pepper, and purple flowers. The palate is classic Morgon, powerful alongside smooth fruit and minerality. The mouthfeel is rich, concentrated, and incredibly savory, but it's still nowhere near its peak. Given the right time, it will become a superstar.
