This Durnberg red wine, made from the Zweigelt grape, is truly exceptional. While the volume of red wine produced in Austria isn't large, it is exceptional. This wine, too, is truly worth the effort.

The ideal conditions for wine growing

Weingut Dürnberg is located in the traditional village of Falkenstein, the historic heart of the Weinviertel region. Wine has been produced here since the 12th century, and between the 13th and 17th centuries, the wine trade between Vienna and Brno was managed by the "Falkenstein Mountain Court." At this hotspot where old and new wine cultures meet, wines with unmistakable aromas and complex spice notes are created. The wine's cool character is the result of an exceptional terroir. On the chalky soils and thanks to a favorable microclimate, the grapes reach ideal ripeness. The valley is protected from strong westerly winds, and the well-ventilated altitude of Durnberg's vineyards seems perfectly suited to winegrowing. Even on extremely hot summer days, the temperature cools considerably in the evenings. This is due to the exceptionally high altitude, which preserves the refreshing acidity.

Durnberg Zweigelt's winemaking

The vines for the Dürnberg Zweigelt Falkenstein grow on a combination of weathered limestone and clay. The soil is also rich in humus, which provides a good water reservoir. Harvest of the fully ripe, healthy grapes begins in early October. After harvest, the crushed grapes are fermented in barrels for two weeks. They are then pressed and aged for five to eight months, partly in 500-liter oak barrels and partly in steel tanks. The result is a complex, elegant red wine with a cool minerality. The aroma reveals a soft, blackberry and currant aroma complemented by spices and vanilla. The palate is full of elegance and finesse, with deep flavors of Morello cherries, herbs, toffee, tobacco, and dark chocolate. This Durnberg red wine is a true treat, even on the finish, completely full and creamy!
