This dessert wine is rarely seen; the bottles practically never leave the island of Lanzarote. This dessert wine is incredibly popular, not only with the most renowned wine writers, but especially with the locals. They prefer to drink all of the Famara themselves. It's called "brown gold," and that's true. A dessert wine with immense depth and richness. Moscatel grapes are grown in various Lanzarote wine regions for this Famara. In some locations, Moscatel grapes can be grown, but it requires a lot of work.

The old vineyard of Famara

Only in the very best vintages can the Vega de Yuco winery produce this wine. The Moscatel grapes grow on the renowned volcanic soils, giving this dessert wine its unique character. The vines are planted in small hollows, surrounded by a small wall of lava stones. This protects the grapes from the strong winds that can occur in the vineyards. Once the grapes are fully ripe, the grapes are harvested entirely by hand and rigorously selected; only the finest are used in this dessert wine. The wine is further aged using the solera system, which dates back to 1996 and originates from the sherry region. Each time, the wine is transferred to a different wooden barrel, it is bottled after approximately six years. This unique piece of craftsmanship is born.

The smell and taste of the Famara Moscatel Dulce

Upon pouring, we see a beautiful brown-gold color, a touch of amber with a hint of orange. It has a rich aroma, bringing to mind notes of nutmeg, orange blossom, and tangerine and orange peel. The initial palate is fantastic, with plenty of softness and a natural sweetness. Lovely hints of tropical fruit, interspersed with toffee, orange, and peach. The smooth juice rolls over the tongue, and we also taste some sweet spices and a lovely acidity. The finish is long, and this dessert wine pairs well with chocolate dishes, hard cheeses, and cocoa-based desserts.
