A white wine made from the Grillo grape on the island of Sicily should be a real treat. And it certainly has become one, thanks in part to the Mezzacorona winery, which took over in 2001. Until a few years ago, Feudo Arancio was completely neglected; the vineyards were in poor condition, not to mention the winery. Yet, the Mezzacorona winemakers saw the potential to produce exquisite wines from these vineyards. And that proved to be true, although a great deal of work was put into the vineyards located on Sicily's southern coast. They were uprooted, replanted, and equipped with an irrigation system. Within a few years, the vineyard reached its peak, and they are proud of it! All the grape varieties used to grow this Grillo are cultivated with the utmost respect for nature, and we taste that in the fresh and crystal-clear style of this white wine.
The Grillo vineyard of Feudo Arancio
What would the island of Sicily be without its beloved Grillo grape? After all, this grape is somewhat the mother of Sicilian white wines. Feudo Arancio also has a unique vineyard on the island's south coast, in the province of Ragusa. The soil here is primarily sandy, allowing the plants to develop wonderfully deep roots. This provides the plants with plenty of nutrients, and the Grillo grapes ripen superbly. The sun does its work, and the fresh ocean breeze provides the right cooling, creating the perfect climate. The harvest is brought in late, usually in the second week of September. After this, this Feudo Arancio Grillo is aged on the lees for a full five months. It develops well and stands head and shoulders above the competition.
This Feudo Arancio Grillo is wonderfully fresh and ripe.
The bottle alone is beautiful and evokes a true Italian feeling. But it doesn't stop there, as the aroma also offers the most beautiful impressions. We're reminded of nuances of tropical fruit, mango, and papaya, which mingle with a touch of jasmine and white flowers. The aroma is very balanced and has a fine acidity. This carries over into the wine's palate, which is very lively. On the palate, beautiful flavors of citrus fruit with hints of spice and grapefruit. A delicious glass is actually the best shorthand description: fresh and stylish.
