Fonseca, a large and renowned port winery, has become renowned for its superb Vintage Ports. But what else is Fonseca known for besides being a powerhouse among Vintage Ports? Fonseca's story begins in 1815, a considerable period of time indeed. The port house was founded by two families: the Fonseca and the Monteiros. Later, Fonseca was acquired by the Guimaraerns family, who spent over a century cultivating Fonseca's reputation and establishing its current reputation. From the second half of the twentieth century to the present day, the Yeatman family has been responsible for the well-being of these beautiful ports.
Well-known Port in the hospitality industry
Fonseca's motto is determination and quality. As long as you're determined, quality will follow. With this consistent quality, which the port house has offered for many years, Fonseca Ports are a popular choice in the hospitality industry. Many top restaurants feature one or more Fonseca varieties on their menus. Fonseca Ports are also often used in wine pairings because they are also perfectly paired gastronomically.
Matured for 3 years in oak barrels
One of these top-quality wines is the Fonseca Ruby Port. While a Ruby Port is usually considered a basic wine, this Ruby proves to be head and shoulders above the rest. This gem is made from Tinta Barocca, Tinta Roriz, and Touriga Nacional, three grape varieties used in many port wines. The Fonseca Ruby Port blend originates from the Baixo Corgo and Cima Corgo regions of the Douro Valley. Here, the wonderful, warm climate allows the grapes to mature in peace. Furthermore, the delightful breeze that blows through the valley contributes to the necessary cooling of the grapes, creating a balanced growing season for all the varieties. When the grapes are ripe, they are harvested individually by hand and verified, after which all wines are aged in oak. The Fonseca Ruby is a blend where the wines have been aged for three years in oak barrels. The influences of this are pleasantly noticeable.
The taste of this Fonseca Porto Ruby Port
Now the time (and the port) are truly ripe for tasting. As soon as we remove the pretty little cork stopper from the bottle, delightful aromas are released. Once poured, we see a beautiful deep ruby red color. A vigorous swirl of the port glass releases a range of aromas, with newspaper and ripe dark fruit being the first notes. There's also a subtle hint of nuts. The taste is wonderfully soft and pleasantly sweet. Not as sweet as any other Ruby port, which makes it immediately very enjoyable. The delicious nuances of ripe dark fruit harmoniously complement the flavor of raisins. Finally, a subtle hint of vanilla beautifully reflects the oak aging.
