Gamla Sangiovese

This red Sangiovese is a beautiful red wine from Golan Heights with an Italian twist. The ancient vines are located in the heart of the Galilee, making it Israel's northernmost and generally considered the finest appellation. The highest-quality area within the appellation is the Golan Heights, the coldest region in Israel. That's quite something! The vineyards are situated on a volcanic plateau at an altitude of 1200 meters. This allows the Sangiovese grapes for this Gamla to receive abundant sunshine but also plenty of coolness, resulting in a long and uneventful growing season. The difference between day and night temperatures is enormous, allowing the grapes to absorb considerable energy from the volcanic soil.

Wood aging for the Gamla Sangiovese

Once the Sangiovese grapes reach full ripeness, they are hand-harvested and rigorously selected. Winemaker Victor Schoenfeld knows the ins and outs of this beautiful wine region like no other and strives to bottle only the finest grapes. Once the Sangiovese grapes for this Gamla arrive at Golan Heights Winery, they undergo a hop-ageing process of twelve months. Victor uses only French barrels because they are the best complement to his renowned Sangiovese grapes. The result is impressive, and it's no wonder this red wine sells out every year.

The aroma and taste of Sangiovese from Gamla in Israel

As soon as the bottle is opened, we immediately smell a powerful aroma of black fruit such as cherries and blackberries, complemented by a generous dose of spice. Upon pouring, we see a beautiful deep red color with purple glints. With the nose in the glass, this red Sangiovese truly unleashes. Plenty of ripe fruit with potpourri, black pepper, and fresh herbs. The taste is, as we've come to expect from Gamla, soft and very powerful. This Sangiovese has a medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, with a subtle tannic texture typical of the Sangiovese grape. On the palate, it offers a broad palette of black fruit such as blackberries, cherries, and currants with plenty of spice.
