Description
Hacienda Monasterio 2022 Cosecha Ribera del Duero
Hacienda Monasterio 2022 comes from a single estate in the heart of the famous "golden mile" of the Ribera del Duero , right between Pesquera and Valbuena de Duero. On these south-facing slopes with chalky soils, Peter Sisseck and his team work entirely organically, allowing the vineyards to fully express the character of the landscape. What makes Hacienda Monasterio 2022 so special? It is an organic Ribera del Duero that combines power and concentration with remarkable freshness and minerality, making it already impressive and clearly showing ageing potential.
Vineyards and region
The grapes for Hacienda Monasterio 2022 come from the estate's own 160-hectare estate in Spain, in the Castilla y León region within the DO Ribera del Duero, located between Pesquera de Duero and Valbuena de Duero. The vineyards are situated on south-facing slopes with a high concentration of limestone in the soil, which gives the wine finesse, tension, and a distinct mineral signature. The climate in Ribera del Duero is continental, with hot, dry summers and cold winters, and large temperature variations between day and night, which allow for the slow and complete ripening of the Tinto Fino. The 2022 year was exceptionally warm and dry with little rainfall, resulting in small berries and high concentration and structure. The vineyards are densely planted and farmed entirely according to certified organic practices, without herbicides, pesticides, or fertilizers, so that soil biodiversity remains intact and the wine reflects the estate's true character.
Vinification and maturation
The harvest for Hacienda Monasterio 2022 is entirely hand-harvested, with the grapes brought to the cellar in small crates and rigorously selected. At the winery, the bunches are 100% destemmed, followed by a long, preferential maceration at a low temperature to gently extract color, aroma, and fine tannins. Maceration lasts approximately 30 days in total, building the wine's structure without harsh extraction. Alcoholic fermentation takes place with the grape's own yeasts, contributing to the estate's signature style. The wine then matures for 18 months in French Allier oak barrels, with a carefully selected proportion of new and used wood so that the oak supports the wine rather than dominates it. This combination of long but controlled maceration, natural yeasts, and precise oak aging produces a powerful yet remarkably refined Ribera del Duero, with tension, depth, and longevity.
Grape composition
Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) – Hacienda Monasterio's own vineyards
The majority of the blend is Tinto Fino, the local Tempranillo variety, sourced from densely planted plots on chalky soils; this grape provides the core of dark fruit, structure, and the typical Ribera del Duero profile.
Cabernet Sauvignon – selected plots on chalky slopes
A smaller share of Cabernet Sauvignon from carefully selected plots adds extra backbone, spiciness and length, and supports the Tinto Fino in warmer years with extra freshness and tension.
Malbec – additional component from our own vineyards
A small amount of Malbec completes the blend, adding extra colour intensity, floral notes and a subtle, juicy finish without overpowering the character of Tinto Fino.
Tasting notes and serving suggestions
In the glass, Hacienda Monasterio 2022 has a deep, red-violet color with a bright sparkle. The nose is intense and layered with ripe red and black fruit, a distinct minerality, and subtle fresh notes reminiscent of mint and herbs, elegantly interwoven with the tertiary aromas of its long oak aging. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet remarkably refined, with a soft, flowing attack, juicy fruit, and energetic yet ripe tannins that provide structure and length. The finish is long, mineral, and perfectly balanced, with a freshness that indicates the wine will continue to develop beautifully in bottle. Serve it best at 16–18°C (60–64°F) with dishes such as grilled or roasted red meat, rack of lamb, game dishes, mushroom stews, or with hard, mature cheeses, to fully express its power, elegance, and mineral depth.
