Herencia Altés Garnatxa Negra is a red wine made by Herencia Altés in the DO Terra Alta. Although Terra Alta is not yet a well-known region, it is one of the largest wine-growing areas in Catalonia. This wine is made entirely from Garnacha Tinta grapes from vineyards in Batea, the town with over 50 percent of the DO's vineyards. The soils are rich in clay and limestone and poor in organic matter.

Ideal climate for the Garnatxa Negra

Even as a child, Núria Altés loved the late summer scents that filled her native village of Batea during the grape harvest, and so she realized her long-dormant dream of producing her own wines with growing passion, continuing her family's tradition. Batea is located in the relatively unknown region of Terra Alta in southwestern Catalonia. The vineyards are situated approximately 580 meters above sea level and are climatically influenced by continental influences. Two prevailing winds significantly impact the quality of the grapes. These are the Cerc, a colder northwesterly wind, which ensures the grapes retain their natural acidity. And the Garvi, a mild sea breeze that ensures the grapes ripen properly. These winds also prevent disease and rot in the bunches.

The vinification of Herència Altés Garnatxa Negra

The grapes for this Garnatxa Negra come from various growers in Batea, Corbera, and Bot in Terra Alta. All these grape growers are fully organic. The winemakers use minimal amounts of sulfites, which further enhances the purity of the wine. All vines are at least twelve years old and are usually bush vines on chalky soils. This age results in wines with complexity and balance. It is also important to harvest the grapes on time to keep the alcohol content within limits. The grapes are harvested manually in boxes and fermented at a controlled temperature of 23-24 degrees Celsius. Maceration then lasts six days. Bright crimson in color, this wine is very expressive, with notes of red fruit and minerals that leap from the glass. Plenty of fruit on the palate, a touch of complexity, and sweet tannins. Pairs well with grilled meats, cabrito, and lamb.
