Herr Ehrhard Unfiltered Riesling Trocken
A characterful Rheingau Riesling bursting with energy and precision. Herr Ehrhard Unfiltered is Carl Ehrhard's distinctive signature wine, vinified dry and bottled unfiltered so you can taste the pure character of the grape and vineyard, unadulterated.
Vineyards and region
The grapes come from Rüdesheim, from approximately 40-year-old vines in the historic Backhaus, Engerweg, and Gessel plots. Steep slopes, poor soil, and abundant sunshine produce ripe fruit with a cool, mineral core. Hand-harvesting ensures maximum selection in the vineyard and perfect grapes in the cellar.
Vinification and maturation
After picking, the bunches are gently pressed in a traditional basket press. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with natural yeasts and contains 6 percent whole berries, which adds tension and aroma. This is followed by 14 months of aging on fine lees in large oak barrels. What does unfiltered mean in Riesling, and what do you taste? Unfiltered means the wine is bottled without fining agents or filtration, preserving texture, depth, and natural aromas, with a clear, clean expression in the glass.
The label
The label features three silhouettes representing the daughters of the owner and cellar master. This personal signature underscores the importance of this cuvée to the estate, a family wine in the most literal sense, created to pass on the pure character of Riesling and its provenance to the next generation.
Grape composition
Riesling 100 percent from Rüdesheim. This grape is known in the Rheingau region for its high natural acidity, citrus and stone fruit notes, and a pronounced mineral backbone that can age beautifully.
Tasting notes and serving suggestions
The bouquet opens with lemon, green apple, and white flowers, followed by wet stone and a light spiciness. The palate is dry and tight with plenty of energy, supported by 7.1 grams per liter of acidity and only 1.2 grams per liter of residual sugar. The 11.5 percent alcohol content keeps the wine refined and drinkable. Must weight at harvest was 88 degrees Öchsle, which explains the ripe yet refreshing style. Serve at 9 to 11 degrees Celsius in a large glass with sushi and sashimi, ceviche, grilled trout, apple and fennel salads, or soft goat cheese. This cuvée has excellent tension and aging potential.
