This 2019 Brunello di Montalcino from Il Poggione is the result of over a century of craftsmanship. In 1890, Lavinio Franceschi founded this winery in the hills surrounding Montalcino, with the mission of elevating the local Sangiovese clone, "Brunello," to a higher level. Today, their oldest vines, planted between 150 and 450 meters of altitude, are among the region's most prized vineyards. The 2019 wine has received international acclaim for its depth, complexity, and aging potential.
Vineyards and region
The grapes for this Brunello come from the oldest plots of Il Poggione, planted at an altitude of between 150 and 450 meters. Their location on the southwest slopes of Montalcino ensures optimal sunshine, while the altitude brings coolness and preserves acidity. The vines are on average 25 to 40 years old and are pruned using the cordon spur and doppio capovolto systems. Harvesting is carried out entirely by hand, with strict selection in the vineyard.
Vinification and maturation
After harvest, the wine is macerated on the skins for 15 to 20 days using the traditional submerged cap technique. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 25 to 28°C. After malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged for a long time in large French oak barrels of 30 to 50 hectoliters. This is followed by an additional aging in the bottle for approximately 12 months, allowing the structure and aromas to fully meld.

Tasting notes and serving suggestions
This wine has a ruby red color and an aroma that opens with notes of cherries, plums, cedar, and leather. The palate is powerful and layered, with notes of dark fruit, chocolate, and spices, wrapped in velvety tannins and a long, mineral finish. Serve at around 18°C (64°F) with grilled meat, game, or aged cheeses such as aged Pecorino or Parmigiano.
Reviews
Antonio Galloni (Vinous) – 96/100
The 2019 Brunello is like silk, with a core of raspberry jam, exotic spices, and a vibrant finish full of violets and minerality. Young, but full of potential.
Jancis Robinson – 17.5/20
Dark ruby red, closed and powerful with layers of cherry and raspberry. Tight tannins, high concentration, and excellent aging potential.
Robert Parker Wine Advocate – 94/100
A complex bouquet of dried fruit, wet slate, laurel, and licorice. The tannins are dry and powdery. Elegant and powerful at the same time.
