Liebfraumilch wines have their origins in the Middle Ages, when a particular type of wine was developed on the shady slopes of Wormser Lieberkirche. For many centuries, the popularity of Liebfraumilch fluctuated, reaching its peak in the 1970s. A carton of Liebfraumilch—a soft, semi-sweet wine with a pleasant flavor—was a standard sight on many a Dutch kitchen table. The quality varied considerably. Today, the quality of Liebfraumilch is much better, and grape varieties are frequently changed to achieve the best quality.

The German wines of Klosterhof Liebfraumilch

Klosterhof is located in the far southeast of the German region of Rheinhessen, a large region on par with, for example, Champagne. The potential is certainly there. Moreover, Rheinhessen is vital for German wines. With no fewer than 26,500 hectares of vineyards, it is by far the largest wine region in Germany. For a long time, the quality was questionable, but since the 1990s, it has risen dramatically – including that of Liebfraumilch wines. No more uninspired bottled wines, but delicious, aromatic bottles of wine for every occasion.

Impressions of Klosterhof Liebfraumilch

Several grape varieties are permitted for making Liebfraumilch wine. Klosterhof has chosen three grapes for this version: Rieslaner, Riesling, and Weissburgunder. The winemaker considers this the ideal combination, allowing the aroma and flavor to truly come together. You can smell it immediately upon pouring Klosterhof Liebfraumilch: soft apricots, fresh grapes, and a distinct note of honey. This sweet character is also noticeable, particularly on the tip of the tongue. This is precisely where the sweetness is most pronounced.
