Le Haut-Médoc de Giscours 2021 Haut-Médoc, France
Le Haut-Médoc de Giscours 2021 is the third wine from Château Giscours, the historic Margaux estate with 3rd Grand Cru Classé status since 1855. This half bottle of 0.375L comes from Giscours' historic Haut-Médoc plots and is made by the same technical team as the château's grand wines. This gives you much of the Giscours signature, fine tannins, aromatic clarity and classic Bordeaux structure, in a more accessible format.
Vineyards and region
The wine comes from the Haut-Médoc, just outside the Margaux appellation, where Giscours has used its own historic plots for this cuvée for over 30 years.
• Location / Origin: The vineyards are located in the Haut-Médoc, on historic Château Giscours terroirs. This location gives the wine a clear Médoc base, while the refined Giscours style remains recognizable.
• Vineyard: Le Haut-Médoc de Giscours is made from 60 hectares of vineyard in production. This scale allows the team ample room for strict selection and to consistently maintain the wine in the house style.
• Soil: The vines grow on fine gravel soils. These poor, well-draining soils are perfectly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon and give the wine structure, freshness, and length.
• Vineyard & harvest: The harvest for the 2021 vintage ran from September 27 to October 13. By working parcel by parcel, the fruit could be brought in at the right time.
Vinification and maturation
The vinification of Le Haut-Médoc de Giscours 2021 is precise and classic, with an emphasis on fruit purity, structure, and drinkability.
• Harvest & selection: After harvesting, the grapes are sorted manually and optically. This ensures a clean base and helps to maintain the fresh, energetic style of the 2021 vintage.
• Fermentation: Vinification takes place in concrete and stainless steel vats. Concrete provides calm and texture, while stainless steel supports the bright fruit expression.
• Maceration: Skin maceration lasts 35 days at 28 °C. This longer extraction gives color, grip, and spicy depth to the wine.
• Maturation / Wood aging: The wine matures for 12 months in barriques. This aging rounds off the tannins and adds subtle notes of cedar, spices, and light toast.
Grape composition
The 2021 vintage consists of 2 classic grape varieties from the left bank of Bordeaux.
• 61% Cabernet Sauvignon – Haut-Médoc: Cabernet Sauvignon forms the backbone of the wine, providing cassis, grip, length, and the recognizable Médoc structure.
• 39% Merlot – Haut-Médoc: Merlot brings roundness, ripe red fruit, and a smoother attack to the blend.
Tasting notes and serving suggestions
Deep ruby red in the glass, with aromas of blackberry, wild strawberry, cassis, blueberry, star anise, cedar, and soft spices. The taste is medium-bodied and vibrant, with fresh tannins, dark fruit, spicy tension, and a juicy finish with a hint of Margaux-like elegance.
• Serving temperature: Serve Le Haut-Médoc de Giscours 2021 at 16–18 °C, so that the fruit, spiciness, and tannins are beautifully balanced.
• Dishes: Pair with sirloin steak, lamb chop, roast veal, duck breast, oven-baked mushrooms, beef stews, or hard cheeses such as Comté and aged Gouda.
