Les Salices Merlot, a new addition from the Languedoc. The wine was partially aged in oak barrels, giving it added complexity. This is evident in both the aroma and the palate. Highly recommended!
An ideal climate for Merlot grapes
Domaine Les Salices, led by Francois Lurton, has been producing superb wines for years in Chile, Argentina, Spain, and, of course, its native France. Lurton grows grapes such as Verdeca, Negroamaro, Malvasia Nera, Viognier, and Primitivo in various locations throughout the Languedoc region. He creates a variety of wines from these grapes. This Merlot comes from Domaine Les Salices. This historic estate, complete with a traditional winery and a chapel nestled in the vineyard, is located at the foot of the Montagne Noire, not far from Carcassonne, thirty kilometers from the Mediterranean Sea.
The vineyards face south, allowing the grapes to optimally enjoy the sun, while the wind provides the necessary cooling. The soil consists of chalky clay, becoming sandier as it approaches the Argent-Double River. In the warm south, the grapes are harvested at night or early in the morning to ensure they reach the cellar cool. Harvesting before temperatures rise prevents oxidation and promotes the preservation of the fruity aromas and fresh acidity. After fermentation, fifty percent of the wine is aged in stainless steel to develop its fruity flavor, while the other half is aged in wooden barrels for added complexity and a rounder mouthfeel.
What does Les Salices Merlot taste like?
The nose reveals subtle aromas of cherries, forest fruits, and warm spices. The palate of this red wine is gentle with a slight bite. Refined and soft hints of ripe red fruit are interspersed with some stimulating spices and a touch of vanilla. Domaine Les Salices comes from François Lurton, the man who also produces fantastic wines in Chile, Argentina, and Spain.
