Juan Leza Arenzana is the founder of the beautiful winery Bodega Leza García in Rioja. Around 1920, he grappled with the idea of starting a business with the goal of producing the finest and most affordable wines in the Rioja region. But he wasn't easily satisfied, and after a long search, he ended up in Rioja Alta, a historic district of Rioja. He planted various grape varieties, including Tempranillo and a small amount of Garnacha. Later, more grape varieties were grown, such as Sauvignon Blanc and Tempranillo Blanco. This top-quality wine is made with 90 percent Tempranillo and 10 percent Garnacha, all from very old vines that his grandfather planted.

Wood bearing for the Leza García Rioja Gran Reserva

Bodega Leza García is still family-owned, and the old vineyards are now invaluable. With deep, strong roots, the plants can withstand the warm, sunny summers. The grapes also receive ample cooling from the wind and falling nighttime temperatures. This results in a magnificent harvest, which is therefore harvested entirely by hand. Bunch by bunch is thoroughly inspected, as only the finest bunches are used in this Leza García Rioja. It bears the name Gran Reserva because this red wine is aged for an impressive 24 months in oak barrels, both French and American, to enhance the wine's depth. This is followed by a long aging period of up to 36 months in the Leza García cellars. Only when the wine is fully mature are the bottles sold, and this red wine can only be produced in the very best vintages.

Full and very powerful this Leza García Rioja Gran Reserva

The moment we open the bottle, we can immediately sense that this is one of Leza García's top wines from Rioja. Beautiful aromas of black fruit, rich spices, abundant cedarwood and vanilla, and a hint of smoke emerge. Grab a large glass, as this red wine definitely needs air to develop. Swirl with this red wine, and the aforementioned aromas are enhanced by a touch of tobacco leaf. The palate is very complex, with a rich mouthfeel, plenty of depth of black fruit, and of course, spices and vanilla. This red wine releases even more flavor on the back of the tongue, but you'll have to discover that for yourself. What a powerhouse.
