The vinification process of Lopez wines

In 1886, José Gregorio López Rivas left Málaga, southern Spain, for Argentina during the phylloxera disaster that devastated European vineyards. He used his savings to reunite his family, and in 1898, the López brothers rented land in Maipu to grow grapes and make their own wine. This was the beginning of Bodegas López. The first bottles were bottled and sold in 1927, and exported from 1930 onward, making Bodegas López one of the first Argentine wineries. The López brothers quickly developed their own unique wine style, which was well received by wine consumers. This increased demand, and the vineyards and cellar were expanded. Currently, Bodegas López has over 1,100 hectares of its own vineyards, some of which date back to 1915. The secret weapon of Bodegas López's unique style is the aging of the wine in their own cellar, usually in one of the 440 French oak barrels, or by aging bottles, some over 85 years old. The Chardonnay and Semillon grapes are harvested entirely by hand. They are then taken almost immediately to the winery, where a rigorous selection process takes place. The grapes are gently pressed and then briefly left in stainless steel tanks to rest on the skins. This process allows for the full aromas to be released. Fermentation then takes place in stainless steel tanks at a low temperature. After several months of aging, the wine is bottled.
