The Italian wines from Puglia
For this crowd-pleaser, we travel to the heel of the boot, the vast southeastern tip of Italy. Welcome to Puglia. This region has established itself in recent decades as a wine cellar for Italian wines. The climate, abundant sunshine, and the necessary freshness thanks to the ever-close coastline make it a paradise for many grape varieties. This was immediately apparent to the talented winemaker Alessandro Michelon. He founded the ultra-modern winery Masseria Borgo dei Trulli here, and now produces arguably the finest wines of Salento.
The winery is located in the municipality of Sava in the province of Tarante, in the heart of the Salento region. This area, thanks in part to Alessandro's passion, has become the cradle of Puglian wines. The craftsmanship begins in the vineyards. For example, the Primitivo bunches are snapped on the vine as soon as they are ripe enough. This deprives the Primitivo bunches of nutrients and allows the grapes to dry naturally.
Impressions of Lucale Primitivo Appassimento
Because the Primitivo grapes dry out, very little juice remains for pressing. However, the juice that remains is of high quality, highly concentrated. This results in a robust, unique, and characterful wine. When pouring, your senses are immediately surprised by unique nuances. The intensity is enormous. Think cherries, soft raspberries, and a hint of fresh currants. On the back of the tongue, you'll taste clear candied red fruit and a hint of rose. Despite its intensity, Lucale Primitivo Appassimento remains soft and supple.
