Maison Brotte Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Hauts de Barville Rouge 2022 0.375L, France
Maison Brotte Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Hauts de Barville Rouge 2022 0.375L is a powerful yet smooth red Rhône wine in a convenient half-bottle format. The cuvée is based on Grenache noir, supplemented with Syrah and Mourvèdre, sourced from the classic soils of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. You'll find ripe red and black fruit, liquorice, Provencal spiciness, and the warm, generous style for which this appellation is so beloved.
Vineyards and Region
Les Hauts de Barville comes from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, located between Orange and Avignon, in the southern Rhône.
Location / Origin: The grapes come from AOC Châteauneuf-du-Pape, one of the most famous appellations in the southern Rhône. This area is known for powerful red blends in which Grenache noir often plays the leading role.
Soil: The grapes come from terroirs with the 4 main soil types of Châteauneuf-du-Pape: galets roulés, fractured limestone, sand, and safres. Galets roulés are large round pebbles that retain heat, while sand and limestone contribute to finesse and drainage.
Vineyard & Harvest: In the vineyard, bud thinning, leaf removal, and green harvesting are employed to limit yield. The grapes are harvested manually, ensuring that ripe and healthy fruit can be carefully selected.
Style of the Origin: Châteauneuf-du-Pape produces wines with ripe fruit, spiciness, and a broad structure. In Les Hauts de Barville, the emphasis is on smoothness, fruit purity, and a less heavily built expression of the appellation.
Vinification and Aging
The vinification focuses on fruit, structure, and soft spiciness.
Harvest & Selection: After manual harvesting, the grapes are fully destemmed and crushed. This results in a purer fruit expression and allows for controlled development of color, aroma, and tannin.
Fermentation: The wine ferments with extraction via délestage and remontage, followed by 3–4 weeks of maceration. What is délestage? Délestage is the temporary draining and returning of wine over the skins, carefully extracting color and tannin.
Aging / Oak aging: The wine ages for 12 months. Syrah and Mourvèdre age in French oak barrels, while Grenache noir ages in 100-year-old foudres and concrete vats. This gives the wine spiciness, structure, and softness, without overwhelming the ripe fruit.
Alcohol Percentage: With 14.5% alcohol, this Châteauneuf-du-Pape has enough power to support the ripe Grenache base, the spicy Syrah, and the structure of Mourvèdre effectively.
Grape Composition
This red Châteauneuf-du-Pape is composed of 3 classic grape varieties from the southern Rhône.
Grenache noir, Châteauneuf-du-Pape: Grenache noir forms the fruity and generous core of the wine, with ripe cherry, strawberry, warmth, and a smooth structure.
Syrah, Châteauneuf-du-Pape: Syrah adds dark fruit, pepper, color, and extra tension to the blend.
Mourvèdre, Châteauneuf-du-Pape: Mourvèdre brings depth, spiciness, tannin structure, and extra length to the finish.
Tasting Notes and Serving Suggestions
In the glass, Les Hauts de Barville Rouge has a dark ruby red color with slight purple reflections. The nose is fresh, intense, and fine, with red fruit, black fruit, liquorice, and after aging, notes of cherry liqueur, truffle, toast, olive, spices, and sous bois. The palate is smooth and generous, with black cherry, garrigue, Provencal wild herbs, fine tannins, and a long finish.
Serving Temperature: Serve this Châteauneuf-du-Pape at 13–15 °C, so that the ripe fruit remains fresh and the spicy notes open up beautifully.
Dishes: Excellent with grilled côte de boeuf, slow-cooked pork, game terrine, leg of lamb with Provencal herbs, boeuf bourguignon, stuffed capon, and mushroom stews.
Awards
