Maison Brotte Esprit Côtes du Rhône Rouge 2022 0.375L Rhône, France
Maison Brotte Esprit Côtes du Rhône Rouge 2022 0.375L is a classic red Rhône wine with Grenache Noir as the main grape, complemented by Syrah. This half bottle is ideal when you want to drink a smooth yet serious glass of red with 1 or 2 people. In this cuvée, Maison Brotte translates its experience from Châteauneuf du Pape into an accessible Côtes du Rhône with ripe red fruit, black cherry, soft spiciness, and fine tannins.
Vineyards and Region
This red Côtes du Rhône comes from the Rhône Valley, where Grenache Noir ripens well on sunny, well-exposed plots.
• Location / Origin: The grapes come from small wine producers in the Rhône Valley who have been collaborating with Maison Brotte for decades. This allows Brotte to specifically select grapes that match the style of Esprit Rouge: ripe, smooth, and spicy.
• Soil: The Grenache grows on well-exposed clay limestone and sandy soils. Clay helps the grape achieve ripe fruit and roundness, while limestone and sand contribute to refinement and a smoother structure.
• Vineyard Management: Severe pruning is carried out in winter, and during the growing season, green harvesting and leaf removal are used. This limits yield and helps the grapes build more concentration.
Grape Composition
Esprit Côtes du Rhône Rouge 2022 is made from classic red grape varieties from the southern Rhône.
• Grenache Noir – Côtes du Rhône: Grenache Noir forms the core of the wine and provides ripe red fruit, roundness, warmth, and soft spiciness.
• Syrah – Côtes du Rhône: Syrah complements the blend with deeper fruit, more structure, and a spicy touch, giving the wine extra tension.
Vinification and Aging
The vinification is traditional and focused on fruit, smoothness, and fine tannins.
• Harvest & Selection: The grapes are harvested when they have reached the right ripeness. This is important for Grenache, as the grape needs sufficiently ripe fruit to fully express its soft, rounded character.
• Fermentation: After a light crushing, the grapes go into lined concrete tanks. Fermentation lasts 15 to 20 days at 28–30 °C, with 2 remontages per day, délestage, and bâtonnage during alcoholic fermentation. What is délestage? Délestage is the temporary draining and pumping back of juice over the grapes, which helps to extract color, fruit, and soft tannins more effectively.
• Aging: After malolactic fermentation, the wine ages for 8–12 months in ancient oak foudres and concrete tanks. This combination gives the wine roundness, spicy depth, and a softer structure without making the fruit too heavy.
Tasting Notes and Serving Tips
In the glass, this Côtes du Rhône has a deep red color with slight brick-red nuances. The aroma is open and fruity, with red stone fruit, black cherry, wild red berries, pepper, thyme, garrigue, licorice, and a light touch of undergrowth. The taste is smooth, full, and elegant, with silky tannins and a spicy, fruity finish.
• Serving Temperature: Serve this Côtes du Rhône at 16–17 °C, so that the ripe fruit, spiciness, and soft tannins come together beautifully.
• Dishes: Delicious with an omelette with mushrooms, steak, veal stew, homemade burger, couscous, and creamy cow's milk cheeses.
Awards
• 90/100, Falstaff (2022): Praised for its intense garnet red color, black cherry, dark wild berries, plum confit, candied orange peel, nougat, ripe plum, chocolate, and salty finish.
More information about Maison Brotte
Maison Brotte was officially founded in 1931 in Châteauneuf du Pape by Charles Brotte, but the family's winemaking roots go back to 1880. Today, Thibault and Benoît Brotte, as the 5th generation, work in the family business alongside their parents. Esprit Côtes du Rhône Rouge fits well with this family tradition: a wine in which the southern Rhône remains recognizable, but in an accessible, smooth, and gastronomic style.
