Although Marcel Deiss generally produces wines exclusively according to the principle of complantation, the winemaker is happy to make an exception for this Pinot Gris. It's the grape that helped make Alsace famous. While this grape variety is used in many countries, it truly began in Alsace. Thanks to the high mineral content of the soil, Pinot Gris in Alsace stands out from those from other countries and regions. It's generally a mild grape, so it doesn't really stand out. However, thanks to the mineral character of Alsace, there's no risk of this grape becoming dull. Moreover, Marcel Deiss's knowledge and expertise also positively impact the final flavor.
Lively Pinot Gris from Marcel Deiss
When you think of Marcel Deiss, you think of the unique character of the terroir, which he consistently prioritizes over grape varieties. They own 32 hectares of vineyards in the heart of Alsace, in the town of Bergheim. All grape varieties are grown here. They produce a wide range of wines, each one fresh and vibrant. The Pinot Gris comes from vineyards located in the Haut-Rhin, in the southern part of Alsace. The vines have an average age of 40 years and are farmed entirely organically. No pesticides are used, and all treatments are natural. Once the grapes are fully ripe, they are harvested entirely by hand.

The bunches are then pressed for a long time. After this, alcoholic fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks. Finally, the wine is aged for another year on its lees. In the glass, this Pinot Gris shines with a pale yellow to golden color. As soon as we pour it, we immediately enjoy the aromas of quince, orange, hazelnut, and graphite. On the palate, the Pinot Gris has a soft attack with plenty of freshness and a lovely minerality. These flavors continue into a long but pleasant finish.
