Marcel Deiss Winery generally produces wines exclusively according to the principle of complantation, where different grape varieties are planted together. But for this Riesling, winemaker Jean Michel Deiss is happy to make an exception. And for good reason, because Rieslings thrive in Alsace. They yield a different result in this region than in other wine regions in the country. They are riper here with softer acidity.
Quality wines from Marcel Deiss
Marcel Deiss was founded in 1947 in the town of Bergheim, in the heart of the Grand Cru region. Mathieu Deiss, with the help of his father, Jean-Michel, is at the helm of this high-quality winery. They own a total of 32 hectares of vineyards planted with various grape varieties. These indigenous grapes are used to produce a wide range of wines. Thanks to the beautiful terroir, this winery has built a solid reputation. Everything revolves around the terroir, which determines the primary character of the final wine.
The Riesling comes from two different vineyards on the estate, one with limestone soil and the other with very dry sandy soil. They operate entirely organically, and the harvest is carried out by hand. Thanks to this hand-picking, the grapes retain good acidity. Once arrived at the winery, the Riesling grapes undergo a long pressing. They then ferment in stainless steel tanks with indigenous yeasts. Finally, the wine is aged for another 12 months on its own lees.
What does the Marcel Deiss Riesling taste like?
With a pale yellow color, this Riesling sparkles in the glass. The aromas of lemon, mandarin, and grapefruit give it an appealing character. The taste is wonderfully refreshing, with a juicy and surprisingly smooth character. The finish is long, revealing a lovely minerality and ripe acidity. This white wine pairs well with fish or white meat dishes.
