The Marqués de Murrieta Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial, made from Tempranillo and Mazuelo grapes, is the epitome of craftsmanship and quality. Considered one of the finest Riojas in the world, this wine offers a rich palette of aromas. Powerful, vibrant, and elegant—this wine is a true treasure from the region and a reflection of the rich winemaking tradition of the Marqués de Murrieta winery.

Extensive vinification for Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial

The grapes for this special wine come exclusively from La Plana, a 40-hectare vineyard planted in 1950 and situated at an altitude of 485 meters, the highest point on the Ygay Estate. This location contributes to the unique quality of the grapes, thanks to the ideal growing conditions and microclimate. The result is a wine that not only embodies the spirit of the Rioja Alta region but also reflects the dedication and expertise of Marqués de Murrieta in every bottle. The grapes for Castillo Ygay are harvested entirely by hand and transported to the winery in small crates. This contributes to the wine's exceptional quality. After rigorous selection, the grapes are destemmed. Fermentation of the grape varieties takes place separately in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures. This process, which lasts approximately 10-12 days, involves regular pumping over to promote contact of the must with the skins, essential for extracting the very best aromas. The Tempranillo is aged for 28 months in American oak barrels, while the Mazuelo spends the same time in French oak barrels. This careful aging process ensures deep integration of flavors. After blending, the blend rests for another 13 months in concrete tanks before bottling.
