Borgo dei Trulli is the new project of winemaker Alessandro, his own winery. He has worked his way up to the top over the years and is known in the region for his high-quality wines. He simply wants to produce the best wines in Puglia. At the same time, he wants to make wines that everyone can afford. And with this juicy, fresh Negroamaro, he demonstrates that this pairs perfectly with the region's second-most important grape variety.
High quality wines for a fair price
Masseria Borgo dei Trulli began planting vines in 1960. The estate is located in the central part of the historic Salento region in Puglia, near the Salice Salentino DOC zone. Production focuses primarily on the traditional and indigenous red grape varieties Negroamaro and Primitivo. Alessandro Michelon founded Orion Wines and acquired Masseria Borgo dei Trulli in 2006. Alessandro's philosophy is to combine tradition and modern techniques to produce high-quality wines at a fair price.
The Negroamaro grapes are carefully selected from low-yielding vineyards in the province of Taranto. The vines have an average age of 15 to 25 years. The grapes are harvested entirely by hand at peak ripeness. After destemming, the grapes are crushed, which preserves their integrity and reduces skin damage, optimizing color extraction. Fermentation follows in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 23 to 25 degrees Celsius for 8 to 10 days. After malolactic fermentation, the wine is transferred to stainless steel containers.
This is what the Negroamaro from Borgo dei Trulli tastes like
The color alone is impressive for a wine in this price range. It's deep dark and also reveals its potential on the nose: aromas of dark cherries, black currants, and delicate herbs. On the palate, it's a powerful, dense red wine with abundant fruit and a soft texture. On the one hand, the magnificent fruit, on the other, aromas of fresh herbs and mint, provide a certain juiciness and freshness. It's incredible how powerful and dense this small, everyday Negroamaro already is. In our opinion, Alessandro has more than achieved his goal.
