Meerlust's powerhouse, the full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon. Unfortunately, availability is limited because this red wine is made from the vineyard with the lowest yield. However, the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes that can be harvested are of unparalleled quality. The old vines are deeply rooted in clay-like soil that retains a lot of moisture, something Cabernet Sauvignon grapes love. This ensures the grape doesn't lack anything and can fully develop.
Manual harvest for Meerlust Cabernet Sauvignon
Meerlust Estate was founded in 1693 and has been owned by the Myburgh family since 1756. The traditional winery, covering 150 hectares, has 110 hectares planted with vines. The vineyards stretch across a steep strip of land on the western flank of the Helderberg Mountains, in the south of Stellenbosch. A steady, cool breeze blows in from nearby False Bay. And it is precisely this coolness that allows the grapes to ripen perfectly. The soils consist of alluvial red clay interspersed with weathered granite.
After manual harvesting and rigorous selection, it is aged in wood for 18 months. A full 70 percent of the barrels used are new, allowing the Cabernet Sauvignon to absorb the many nuances of the casks. According to winemaker Chris Williams, this is the ultimate glass of South African Cabernet Sauvignon!
What does Meerlust Cabernet Sauvignon taste like?
The Meerlust Cabernet Sauvignon has an intense, vibrant purple color with a slight copper hue at the rim. The aroma displays intense notes of cassis, plums, and classic cedar/cigar box, with numerous dark fruit aromas. The palate is full-bodied and impressively structured. Intense blackcurrant and plum flavors are enhanced by refined tannins and fresh, natural acidity. The palate is rich and full-bodied with a beautiful, long finish you'll never forget.
