Description

This red Mocavero Puteus is very popular in Italy, and we understand why, because it's a textbook example of a top-notch Salice Salentino. In warm Puglia, in the heart of Salice Salentino, Mocavero's old vineyards are filled with the Negroamaro grape. The thick, old stems have been producing full, powerful bunches since 1989, the year the Mocavero brothers, Francesco and Marco, first began making wine. Their goal was to create the finest wines from Puglia, and they succeeded, and over the years, the wines have become increasingly powerful and better. This Puteus Salice Salentino has also become a phenomenon.

Wood bearing for the Mocavero Puteus

When the grapes reach perfect ripeness in the warm Salice Salentino region, they are harvested by hand under the brothers' supervision. Each one is inspected and transported in small crates to the press. After pressing, this red wine is aged in oak for a full eighteen months. Some of the oak used is new, which imparts a rich flavor to this beautiful wine. Thanks to its long aging, this Puteus qualifies as Riserva, something Mocavero is proud of.

What does the Mocavero Puteus Salice Salentino taste like?

This Riserva has been aged for an extra-long time in oak barrels, making it special. Puteus Salice Salentino is a delightful glass with a hint of leather and spice on the nose, along with cherries, vanilla, and oak. The palate is lightly aged with notes of almond, a warm and somewhat sultry flavor. Spicy, not too heavy, but primarily juicy. With a touch of acidity, the finish is lively. Pairing this wine with food is certainly possible. Pastas, game dishes, grilled red meat, and stews are wonderful pairings.
