What a renowned wine this Montesodi Chianti Rufina from the Frescobaldi winery is! It's named after the vineyard's soil, which is described as "Montesodi"—hard stone. This soil and the perfect location of the unique vineyard guarantee a top-notch wine. The first Chianti Rufina Cru was born in 1974, and today it's an important wine for all of Italy. For Mr. Frescobaldi, it's the wine he remembers as outstanding in his youth, and it still does so with complete conviction.

The old vineyard of Montesodi Chianti Rufina

This red wine also uses the Tuscan favorite, the Sangiovese grape. With a hard, chalky soil, the grapes thrive. The old, thick trunks yield ripe bunches, brought to full bloom by the abundant sunshine. After careful work on the vines, the Sangiovese from the Montesodi vineyard is harvested by hand in 15 kg crates. Further care and selection takes place in the cellar, where the grapes are carefully inspected on the sorting table. Only the highest-quality clusters are selected based on their strength and health. After pressing and a very long fermentation in the Frescobaldi cellars, Montesodi begins its aging process in French and Austrian oak barrels. The wine remains in the barrels for eighteen months before bottling. For the following months, the finished bottles of Montesodi are stored in the Frescobaldi cellars, giving it ample time to develop maximum elegance and potential.

The aroma and taste of Montesodi Chianti Rufina

Montesodi is immediately characterized by an extremely elegant, bright ruby-red color. The aroma confirms its appeal with a very open nose. Beautiful notes of cherry blossom, violet, and hibiscus are followed by fruit like blackcurrant and blackberry. This gives way to an elegant spiciness, with hints of licorice and pepper. The wine has excellent minerality and fantastically well-integrated, light graphite notes. The palate opens with freshness and develops into a full-bodied wine with abundant flavors of black fruit, spices, leather, cocoa, vanilla, and more. The tannins are silky and mature, and the finish is long, juicy, and seductive.
