Vian Montgras is a renowned winery based in the Colchagua Valley. We've had a soft spot for this winery ever since Montgras wines arrived in the Netherlands. They offer good, everyday wines at a reasonable price, as well as complex varieties like this Montgras Handcrafted 3 Rare Pinot Noir. Each wine in the Montgras Handcrafted series is developed by an outstanding winemaker, specially selected by Montgras. The winemaker is given free rein to create an exquisite wine. Adolfo Hurtado was chosen for the third edition. He chose Pinot Noir: just like Hurtado himself, a headstrong, elusive grape capable of creating the finest wines. The Pinot Noir grapes for Montgras Handcrafted 3 Rare Pinot Noir are grown on Montgras's renowned vineyards in the Leyda Valley. This fresh and cool valley is located just 12 kilometers from the mighty Pacific Ocean. White grape varieties thrive here, but Pinot Noir also thrives in a cool climate, which is why Adolfo Hurtado chose this unique grape.

Impressions of Montgras Handcrafted 3 Rare Pinot Noir

After the harvest and pressing, the winemaker gets to work. Adolfo keeps a close eye on the process; he feels responsible for every bottle that leaves the cellar. The wine is aged for a full 13 months in large French oak barrels. This gives the Pinot Noir a little more punch. Combined with the cool climate, this results in blossoming flowers and generous red cherries, combined with the complexity of oak and a hint of tobacco. A beautiful spectacle that unfolds on the palate. It's such a shame Adolfo didn't produce more: only 3,400 bottles of this impressive Montgras Handcrafted 3 Rare Pinot Noir were filled.
