The name of this superb white wine comes from the Ortiga herb, commonly found in the vineyards. The Ortiga herb, also known as nettle, grows among the vines and has a significant impact on the quality of Ortiga wines. Today, the winery is owned by Bodegas Yuntero and is located in the historic region of La Mancha. This winery was founded in 1954 by several winegrowers who wanted to produce their own wine. Their only goal was to produce the finest and most affordable wine from La Mancha. They more than succeeded, and after merging with another cooperative in 2000, the number of members now stands at 700. Significant investment continues, and today, there is a state-of-the-art winery dedicated to Ortiga wines.
Ortiga Winery and the vineyards
Two grape varieties are grown for this white Ortiga wine: Airen and Sauvignon Blanc. Both are grown in the Vino de la Tierra de Castilla wine region. This region offers the perfect climate for both Airen and Sauvignon Blanc grapes. The sun can easily do its work, allowing the bunches to ripen evenly. The wind and falling nighttime temperatures provide the right cooling, allowing the harvest to be grown entirely organically. The rich soil structure, rich in lime and gravel, gives the harvest the perfect freshness, which is evident in the aroma and taste of this white Ortiga wine.
What does Ortiga Airen Sauvignon Blanc taste like?
Upon opening the bottle of Ortiga wine, we immediately smell a vibrant aroma of tropical fruit with hints of green herbs. In the glass, this wine is a light yellow with a green sheen that is very inviting. With our noses over the glass, we encounter a diverse aroma, abundant white and citrus fruit combined with passion fruit and gooseberry. This fresh aroma continues on the palate, with lovely freshness of lime and grapefruit with hints of apple and pear. The finish is thirst-quenching with a richness of green herbs like mint.
