This fantastic Port winery, Quinta do Portal, is still family-owned, and we clearly see the difference. It's situated in one of the most beautiful areas along the Douro River, near the town of Pinhão. What makes it particularly special is that the family controls its own vineyard of no less than 95 hectares. They can cultivate the grapes under their supervision and carefully refine them. Portal owns four beautiful Quintas in total: Quinta da Abelheira, Quinta do Confradeiro, Quinta dos Muros, and Quinta do Portal. Thanks to these different areas, they can produce a wide range of Port wines of absolute top quality. In recent years, Quinta do Portal has invested heavily in both the vineyards and in modern winemaking techniques, without compromising traditions. After all, everyone knows that Port wines are made through many traditions.
Wood aging for Portal's Tawny Port
This port is made from the traditional grapes found in the port region. All grapes are grown in a perfect climate with a rich and full soil structure. This ensures the bunches receive plenty of nutrients and are well-suited to the warm climate. All bunches are harvested by hand and subject to strict quality control. Only the finest bunches are used in this Tawny Port, but before that, it is aged in oak. Port varieties aged six years or more are used to blend this Tawny Port. This ensures a consistent flavor, allowing us to enjoy Portal's signature style.
What does Portal Fine Tawny Port taste like?
Drink this port slightly chilled for the best tasting experience. Room temperature is also fine, but we find a slightly chilled port more refined. In the glass, it has a brownish-red color with an orange hue, which is typical for a tawny port. On the nose, this Portal surprises us with notes of ripe cherries, a hint of caramel, and a touch of fresh pepper, giving it a fuller body. The ripe aromas are reflected in the pure taste. Beautiful nuances of nuts, chocolate, fresh black fruit, and a touch of raisins complete the picture.
