In a rocky setting at the foot of the Andes, Portillo Pinot Noir is produced at an altitude of over 1200 meters. This beautiful, elegant cherry-red wine from Salentein is exactly as a Pinot Noir should be. It has an elegant spiciness interspersed with notes of ripe cherries, raspberries, and blackberries.

The old Pinot Noir vineyard of Portillo

El Portillo's vineyards cover an impressive 68 hectares and are the ideal location for top-quality wines. The vineyards benefit from sunny weather during the day and the cool Andes at night. The grapes are hand-sorted and carefully processed. Like the other wines in the Portillo series, the Pinot Noir is made in a modern way with cooled fermentation in large stainless steel tanks. This allows the true expression of the fruit to emerge.

Salentein and Portillo born out of love by Mijndert Pon

Salentein is owned by Dutch businessman Mijndert Pon and was founded in 1992. The winery quickly grew into a major global enterprise. Pon's vision has always been to create a sustainable business. Producing the highest quality Argentine wines is central to this. This is done with respect for the local community and nature. This striking vineyard is designed in the shape of a cross. Each wing houses a small, two-story winery. The stainless steel tanks for cooled fermentation are located on the ground floor. One floor below, eight meters underground, are oak barrels for aging the wine. Using gravity, wine is transferred from the tanks into wooden barrels.

What does Portillo Pinot Noir taste like?

The winemaking process combines modern and traditional techniques, followed by aging in stainless steel tanks. The grapes are hand-sorted and carefully processed. The vines, which are over thirty years old and situated at high altitude, give the wine its remarkable freshness and intensity. This wine pairs wonderfully with duck or rabbit. It can also be served slightly chilled as an aperitif on a warm summer day.
