Principe de Viana's vision is clear: to produce great wines sustainably. Simple in its simplicity. But 35 years after its founding, this winery has certainly lived up to that vision. All those decades of experience are paying off, including in this Principe de Viana Chardonnay Barrel Fermented. While Principe de Viana is a truly Spanish winery, primarily cultivating native grape varieties, they also utilize international all-rounders, such as Chardonnay.
The vinification of Principe de Viana Chardonnay Barrel Fermented
As with any wine, it all begins in the vineyards. And they are in a heavenly location, nestled against Mount Moncayo, one of the highest mountains in all of Spain. Besides being idyllic, this mountain also serves a significant function for the vineyards. It forms a natural barrier against the cold and wind, allowing the Chardonnay grapes to ripen beautifully. After the harvest comes the vinification process. This is where the Principe de Viana winemaker showcases his skills. Fermentation takes place in new oak barrels, 80% of which are French. The remaining 20% are in American oak. After 90 days of aging, Principe de Viana Chardonnay Barrel Fermented is also aged for three months on the lees, which adds even more depth and complexity to the wine.
