"What a full-bodied and full-bodied red wine" was the first thing we noted when we drank this red Prunotto Pian Romualdo Barbera D'Alba. A wine with a very long history, as the first Prunotto wines were produced as early as 1905. Initially, it was managed by the cooperative called Cantina Sociale "Ai Vini delle Langhe." Several wineries then joined forces and set out to create the finest wines. Due to many negative influences, the winery soon closed, but co-founder Alfredo Prunotto purchased the winery a few years later. Under his leadership, who gave it the name Prunotto, the wines became a great success and are renowned worldwide. None other than the Antinori family was impressed by the quality, and when Alfredo Prunotto decided to retire, the Antinori family bought the winery. And yes, there's so much knowledge available there, which further improved the quality.

The old vineyard for the Pian Romualdo Barbera D'Alba

Pian Romualdo was first produced in 1961 from the Prunotto vineyards in the Monforte D'Alba region. Barbera vines grown here benefit enormously from the temperature fluctuations between day and night, giving Pian Romualdo a distinct freshness, refined aromas, and excellent aging potential. Once the Barbera grapes are ripe, which takes a considerable amount of time, they are harvested by hand. Each bunch is inspected, and only the finest are used in this red wine. It is then aged in oak for a full twelve months. All this results in a top-notch wine from the Barbera D'Alba region.

Full and very powerful this Prunotto Pian Romualdo Barbera D'Alba

We pour this red wine into a large glass and are met with a stunningly beautiful reddish-purple color. It smells of black fruit with hints of herbs and spices. But also cedar, toast, and dried plums are noticeable. On the palate, it surprises us, initially with a fresh attack of black fruit and some cedar notes. As the wine warms up slightly, it also reveals hints of cocoa and a touch of earth. This beautiful red Barbera D'Alba comes from a single vineyard called Pian Romualdo, a unique red wine full of passion and fire.
