This Remelluri Labastida wine is made in the eponymous village of Labastida. A beautiful blend of the typical Rioja grapes Tempranillo, Grenache, and Graciano. These grapes are organically grown on chalky, clay, and limestone terraces. The careful vinification produces a fruity wine in both aroma and flavor, perfectly balanced.
10 months of wood aging for Remelluri Labastida
The Remelluri winery was originally founded by monks in the 14th century. Over the years, it has changed hands several times. In 1967, the winery was purchased by Jaime Rodriquez, which brought about significant changes. He and his wife restored the vineyards to their former glory, significantly improving the quality of the wine in the years that followed. Today, son and daughter Telmo and Amaia Rodriquez are at the helm of the estate.
The grapes are grown on the border of La Granja, in the town of Labastida. The vineyards are situated on the slopes of the Sierra de Tolono mountains, making them the highest point in the region. The surrounding mountains protect the grapes from external influences. The grapes are planted in poor soil. The limestone, clay, and calcareous terraces give them unique characteristics. At peak ripeness, the grapes are carefully harvested by hand and taken directly to the winery. Here, the wine is aged for 10 months in French oak barrels, creating the necessary tension and concentration in the final wine.
