Rocca di Castagnoli Poggio A'Frati Chianti Classico Riserva is a special wine from the Chianti Classico region of Italy. The grapes for this wine are grown in the Poggio A'Frati vineyard, which surrounds the medieval fortress of Rocca di Castagnoli. The vineyard has several plots with varying exposures, altitudes, and soil characteristics, which contribute to the wine's complexity and character.

15 hectares of vineyard of Rocca di Castagnoli

Rocca di Castagnoli Poggio A'Frati Chianti Classico Riserva originates from vineyards located in the eponymous Poggio A'Frati area, where approximately 15 hectares of vineyards are spread around a hill dominated by an ancient monastery. The area is situated in a hilly landscape, with an average altitude of 420 meters, and the vineyards extend both north and southeast. The soils of this area are primarily composed of Alberese, a type of limestone, and other clayey, chalky soils. This specific soil and the altitude of the vineyards contribute to the unique characteristics and the expression of the terroir in the wine. The vinification process for Rocca di Castagnoli Poggio A'Frati Chianti Classico Riserva begins with the hand harvest in the second half of October. After harvesting, the grapes undergo maceration at a temperature of around 28 degrees Celsius for 10 to 12 days. Malolactic fermentation then takes place in steel tanks. After fermentation and malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged for at least 15 months in typical Chianti barrels and tonneaux. It is then aged in steel tanks for at least another 6 months. Finally, the wine is aged in bottle for another year before it is ready to be enjoyed.
