Description
Roonen Bergh Chardonnay 2023
Heerlyckheyt Roonen Bergh lies on the slopes of the Rodeberg, with iron sandstone and clay as its base. The sandstone retains heat for better ripening, while the clay is fertile, moisture-retaining, and easily rootable. The slope provides natural drainage, and the surrounding forest creates a favorable microclimate, ideal for healthy grapes and pure wines.
This 2023 Chardonnay focuses on freshness and finesse, with just the right amount of oak for depth without losing its tension. The hand-picked grapes provide a pure base with ripe yellow fruit on the nose and a crisp, mineral bite on the palate. What does aging on fine lees mean? It's aging on the lees after fermentation, for added texture and subtle roundness.
Vinification and maturation
Harvested by hand. 85% is fermented and aged in stainless steel for freshness and precision, and 15% in French oak barriques for nuance. The wine then rests for six months on fine lees, softening the mouthfeel and allowing the aromas to beautifully blend. This combination maintains a balance between energy and layering in the glass.
Grape composition
Chardonnay – selected plots
100% Chardonnay. The stainless steel portion brings tension and citrus, while the barrique portion adds a subtle oaky note and creaminess.
Tasting notes and serving suggestions
The nose reveals melon, citrus, and a hint of butter, beautifully integrated with oak notes. The palate is crisp, fresh, and minerally with fine acidity. The finish is perfectly balanced, with good fruit density and a long, lingering finish. Serve as an aperitif or at the table with fresh salads, poultry, and fish. Best served chilled.
