Anyone who thinks winemaking in Moldova is in its infancy should try a glass of Salcuta Merlot Winemaker's Way. Moreover, this Eastern European country's impressive track record demonstrates that it's no novice to European winemaking. Winemaking dates back to the Middle Ages but flourished in the 14th and 15th centuries, when Moldova was still a kingdom. They remain a major wine producer within Europe, although the majority of their exports go to Moscow.

The vineyards of Salcuta

Salcuta was founded in 1995, at a time when Moldova was regaining independence and shaking off communism. It is located in one of Moldova's most breathtaking wine regions, Stefan Voda, in the northeast of the country. With the Black Sea at its doorstep, Salcuta's vineyards receive a generous amount of fresh air. Combined with the abundant sunshine, this ensures that the grapes develop almost perfectly. The result is a richly flavored Merlot Winemaker's Way, which is a superb wine in every respect.

A red wine from Moldova

Moldovan wineries, including the Salcuta winery, specialize in traditional French grape varieties. Merlot is therefore an essential part of Salcuta's range. Because Salcuta's winemakers are highly knowledgeable and dedicate considerable attention to their wines, this Merlot is much more vibrant than you might expect. The red wine has more flavor and structure. As soon as you take a sip of Salcuta Merlot Winemaker's Way, you'll be overwhelmed. Is this a Moldovan wine? And at this price? We'll quickly have another glass of this resounding success.
