Description

Stag's Leap Wine Cellars SLV Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

Stag's Leap Wine Cellars SLV Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 is a single-vineyard Cabernet from the historic heart of Stag's Leap District, originating from the parcel that became world-famous in 1976 during the "Judgment of Paris." Planted in 1970, the SLV vineyard proved with the 1973 vintage that Napa could compete with the great Bordeaux châteaux. What makes SLV 2019 so special? It's a 100% estate Cabernet that expresses the volcanic soul of this parcel, with layered dark fruit aromas, graphite minerality, and structure built on long cellar development.

Vineyards and region

The grapes for this 2019 SLV Cabernet Sauvignon come entirely from SLV's own vineyard in the Stag's Leap District, Napa Valley. This was Stag's Leap Wine Cellars' first vineyard and has been in continuous use since 1970, with blocks gradually replanted to maintain peak quality. Blocks 2A, 3A, 1A, 3B, and Block 4 (the "grande dame" from 1972) form the core of the 2019 blend. On the eastern side of the vineyard, the soils are dominated by fire and lava rock, providing structure, pronounced minerality, and concentrated dark fruit with ripe, elegant tannins. The western portions have more alluvial soils, which add vibrant fruit notes and aromatic lift. This results in a Cabernet that is both powerful and refined, with a clear Stag's Leap signature.

Vinification and maturation

The harvest for SLV 2019 took place between October 8th and 21st, following a growing season with a wet spring, a cool start, and then near-ideal summer conditions that ensured long, even ripening. Each parcel and block was harvested separately and fermented in stainless steel tanks, preserving the distinct characteristics of each part of the vineyard. Malolactic fermentation was complete, softening the texture and giving the wine added roundness. The wine then matured for 21 months in small, 100% new French oak barrels, with the different lots kept separate until they were carefully blended at the end of the aging process. Winemaker Marcus Notaro specifically selected the barrels based on wood type and toast level to enhance SLV's signature notes of graphite, dark fruit, and cocoa without overpowering the fruit. The alcohol content is around 14.5%, with sufficient acidity to keep the wine fresh and exciting.

Grape composition

Cabernet Sauvignon – SLV vineyard, Stags Leap District
SLV 2019 is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the estate's own vineyard. The combination of volcanic and alluvial soils, old blocks like Block 4, and the relatively cool location within Napa produces a Cabernet with blackcurrant, plum, and fig notes, supported by graphite, cocoa powder, and a clearly present yet refined tannin structure.

Tasting notes and serving suggestions

In the glass, the 2019 SLV reveals a deep, dark ruby red color. The nose offers generous aromas of black currant, plum, and candied fig, complemented by notes of cocoa powder, graphite, and a hint of violet. On the palate, the wine boasts dense yet polished tannins that meld with layers of dark fruit, fig, and floral nuances, while the mineral undertones add tension and length. The structure, dark fruit, and minerality clearly indicate excellent aging potential: this vintage is already impressive but will continue to develop over the next 10 to 20 years. Ideally, serve the 2019 SLV at 16 to 18°C and, in its youth, allow it to decant for an hour. At the table, it is a perfect partner for classics such as Steak Diane, grilled bavette with chimichurri, confit de canard with roasted figs and polenta or richly filled mushroom ravioli with a spicy tomato or meat sauce.
