We've known the port house Taylor's for years, and we're also familiar with its superb quality. This is, of course, due to the port house's long history. Merchant Job Bearsley founded Taylor's in 1692 to produce the finest Ports in Portugal. And he succeeded, making Taylor's one of the few houses still entirely family-owned. Generation after generation has contributed to the success story, and we continue to enjoy it. The long history is clearly evident when we look into the port cellars, where very old barrels, up to 60 years old, are still maturing. And that's only possible with the most powerful and refined Ports.
A young and refined port, this Select Ruby
This red port uses the finest bunches, all sourced from Taylor's Port's own vineyards. The grapes used are Touriga Francesa, Tinta Roriz, and Touriga Nacional, all grown on very old vines. The old vineyard is nestled in a subsoil of slate and minerals, located near the Douro River. The climate is perfect, and the grapes are harvested entirely by hand after a long maturation period. Only the finest bunches are used for this Ruby Port, hence the name "Select Reserve Port." After fermentation, this Taylor's Port Select Reserve Port is aged for an impressive three years in port pipes—large wooden barrels that make each port special. Yes, this red port, too, is a work of art.
The aroma and taste of Taylor's Select Ruby
As we poured it, we knew for sure: this was going to be a treat. A ruby-red color captivated our senses with its aromas. Nosing the glass, we noted nuances of blackcurrant, cherry, currant, and a hint of sweet spice. The palate of this Select Ruby is rich and sweet, with soft flavors of black fruit and light spice. In short, this Taylor's Port is PERFECT, and delicious as an aperitif and with blue cheeses.
