Tinazzi Ca' de' Rocchi La Bastìa Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG 2022 Veneto, Italy

Tinazzi Ca' de' Rocchi La Bastìa Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG 2022 is a powerful Amarone from Veneto, made from 90% Corvina and Corvinone and 10% Rondinella. After harvesting, the grapes are dried until December, concentrating their flavour, colour, and structure. With 15% alcohol, 12–18 months of aging in French and American oak, and scores up to 98 points, this is a serious Italian red wine for rich dishes and special occasions.

Vineyards and region

The grapes come from selected vineyards in Valpolicella, the classic Amarone region in Veneto.

Location / Origin: The vineyards are located in a hilly area at an altitude of 150–300 m in Valpolicella. This altitude helps to balance ripeness, freshness, and aromatic tension.

Classification: Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG is a protected designation of origin with strict rules for grapes, drying, and production. This DOCG status emphasizes the classic origin and unique character of this wine style.

Region: Valpolicella is located in Veneto, around Verona, and is strongly associated with Corvina, Corvinone, and Rondinella. These local grape varieties form the basis for Valpolicella, Ripasso, and Amarone.

Wine style: La Bastìa is one of the most important wines in the Ca' de' Rocchi line. The wine is intense, full-bodied, and layered, but remains recognizably Valpolicella due to the combination of cherry fruit, spiciness, and balsamic notes.

Vinification and aging

The vinification follows the classic Amarone approach, with dried grapes and long aging in oak.

Appassimento: After harvesting, the grapes are dried in a drying room until December. What makes Amarone different? This drying process evaporates moisture from the grapes, concentrating sugars, aromas, and structure.

Grape processing: After drying, the grapes are pressed and destemmed. This is followed by a long skin maceration with fermentation, allowing colour, tannins, and aromas to develop carefully.

Fermentation: Maceration and fermentation last approximately 20 days at a controlled temperature of 20–24 °C. This approach suits a wine with high concentration, body, and aging potential.

Aging / Oak aging: The wine ages for 12–18 months in French and American oak barrels of 5, 20, and 40 hl. This aging imparts notes of chocolate, vanilla, leather, spices, and extra roundness.

Technical balance: With 15% alcohol, 5.70 g/l acidity, and 4.4 g/l residual sugar, this Amarone has a lot of power, but also sufficient freshness and balance.

Grape composition

This Amarone is made from the classic grape varieties of Valpolicella.

90% Corvina and Corvinone – Valpolicella: Corvina and Corvinone give this wine its cherry fruit, plum, red berries, structure, and spicy depth.

10% Rondinella – Valpolicella: Rondinella complements the blend with softness, colour, and extra suppleness on the palate.

Tasting notes and serving suggestions

Intense red in the glass with garnet reflections, followed by aromas of red berries, plums, cherries, maraschino cherries, spices, balsamic, chocolate, leather, and vanilla. The taste is rich, full, and versatile, with a firm structure, soft ripe tannins, great depth, and a long spicy finish.

Serving temperature: Open Tinazzi Ca' de' Rocchi La Bastìa Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG 2022 approximately 1 hour before serving and pour at 18–20 °C.

Dishes: Serve with grilled beef, stew, lamb, game dishes, dishes with rich sauces, mature cheeses, or dark chocolate.

Awards

98/100, Luca Maroni (2022 vintage): A remarkably high rating for Ca' de' Rocchi Amarone La Bastìa 2022, placing this Amarone among the highest-rated wines in its category.

92/100, Falstaff Amarone Trophy (2022 vintage): Reviewed by Othmar Kiem and Simon Staffler with dark ruby colour, garnet nuances, sweet cherry, laurel, thyme, mocha, dark chocolate, firm tannins, and a long dark spicy finish.
