The origin lies in the hilly south of Rheinhessen, where limestone and cooling winds provide essential conditions for viticulture.
-
Location / origin: The grapes for the Réserve come from the Morstein vineyard near Westhofen, in the German wine region of Rheinhessen. This vineyard is located near Monzernheim, the home of Weedenborn.
-
Soil: The Morstein terroir consists of clay marl with limestone inclusions above a subsoil of limestone rock. The water-bearing limestone layers can provide the vines with water even during longer dry periods.
-
Climate & influences: The higher-lying vineyards around Monzernheim and Westhofen benefit from wind and relatively cool conditions. As a result, the grapes ripen gradually, allowing space for aromatic development and the retention of natural acids.
Spontaneous fermentation and prolonged yeast contact form the basis of the refined, Burgundy-inspired cellar style.
-
Fermentation: The wine undergoes spontaneous fermentation using naturally occurring yeasts. This method aligns with Gesine Roll's pursuit of a unique character, with the development of each batch carefully monitored.
-
Maturation / oak aging: The Chardonnay matures for 18 months in wooden barrels on the full lees. This long contact provides extra volume and a creamy texture, while the oak aging adds a subtle spicy framework. This creates a structured wine with both softness and fresh tension.
The Burgundian inspiration takes shape in a pure, dry interpretation of a single grape variety.
-
100% Chardonnay – Westhofen: Here, Chardonnay combines a broad mouthfeel with lively acidity. This combination provides a solid foundation for long-term barrel aging and gives the wine sufficient structure to continue developing in the bottle.
