One of Pfaffl's most famous wines is this white wine, Vienna 1, made with Grüner Veltliner, Pinot Blanc, and Riesling grapes. The twenty-year-old vines come from two vineyards, Herrenholz and Raschen, both with spectacular views of Vienna. Due to the altitude, the temperature difference between day and night is very high, which is perfect for the grapes. During the day, they can accumulate sugars thanks to the sun, and at night, they can cool down and recover from the heat. This makes the growing season very slow and peaceful, allowing the grapes to absorb the rich soil.

The old vineyard of Pfaffl Wien 1

The grapes for this Vienna 1 are grown in so-called "Flysch" soils, a local term for small, sandstone soils. The vines are approximately 18 years old and were planted at a density of around 4,000 vines/ha. To utilize the soil's warmth and achieve a high canopy, a medium-height training system with a few arching cuts is used. Harvest takes place in early September when the grapes are perfectly ripe. The grapes are selected directly in the vineyard to ensure the quality of the wine. The grapes are then transferred to the cellar where they are immediately crushed and pressed. After about two hours of maceration, they are pressed gently with a pneumatic press. Fermentation takes place under automatic temperature control at around 18 degrees Celsius. The wine is stored in stainless steel tanks and bottled directly in Burgundian bottles at the winery.

The scent and taste of Pfaffl Wien 1

This white wine therefore has aromas of green apple, citrus, white peppercorns, green herbs, and a touch of ripe peach. Riesling brings the aromatic fruit, Pinot Blanc the power and structure, and Grüner Veltliner the spiciness. In short, a magnificent wine from Austria!
