Wittmann 100 Hugel Pinot Blanc

Hugel refers to the hilly inland region of Rheinhessen. With the 100 Hugel wines, Wittmann presents a new series of wines with a unique character. In this series, winemaker Philipp is releasing a Silvaner, a Pinot Blanc, and a Riesling. The young vines are planted on a limestone vineyard, making them somewhat more accessible than the other wines in the range.

Wittmann, located in Westhofen, is among the absolute top wines in the Rheinhessen region. Their wines regularly win awards, and that's certainly no coincidence. The winery has a long tradition, dating back to 1663. It's a dedicated family whose years of experience have also contributed to the quality of their wines. They were among the first in Germany to adopt organic viticulture early on, back in 1990. His father, Günter Wittmann, had long since abandoned traditional winemaking methods and therefore switched to more environmentally friendly methods of growing his grapes. This also means extra work. The family owns 25 hectares of vineyards, primarily planted with Riesling, but Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, and Silvaner are also found in abundance. His son Philip, under his father's watchful eye, now runs the winery. The grapes are harvested rigorously and selectively by hand. All grapes arriving at the cellar are crushed with their stems, then macerated on their skins for eight hours in a refrigerated press and slowly pressed. Fermentation then follows in traditional large wooden barrels. Thanks to their advanced age, they do not influence the wine's aromas, but instead add complexity and structure.

The ripe aromas of Wittmann 100 Hugel Pinot Blanc

The 100 Hugel Pinot Blanc is pale yellow in color. The nose reveals ripe aromas of white and yellow fruit, along with subtle notes of basil and mint. On the palate, this Pinot Blanc is creamy and smooth with just the right amount of juiciness and pleasant acidity. This Pinot Blanc pairs well with asparagus or light fish dishes.
