When you think of Australian wines, you think of a good Shiraz. However, Yalumba Winery knows how to make beautiful wines from grapes known worldwide. This velvety-smooth Yalumba Merlot from the renowned Y series is no exception. Recently added to our range, but definitely here to stay.
A Merlot from Australia
In 1849, British-born Samuel Smith purchased thirty hectares of land in Angaston, Australia, and planted his first vines there. He subsequently named the land Yalumba, meaning "all the land around." 160 years later, Yalumba Winery is the oldest family-owned winery in Australia. Currently, the sixth generation runs the winery with a modern approach. For example, in 1970, Yalumba was the first winery in the world to release Riesling wines with screw caps. Years later, they have a wide range of quality wines and have won numerous awards.
This Yalumba Merlot from the Y Series is made from 100% Merlot grapes, sourced from southern Australia. This red wine is fermented at cold temperatures to preserve its wonderfully soft and supple character. The winemaker also uses only wild grapes naturally occurring in the vineyard. The harvest for this red wine is entirely by hand to select only the finest fruit for this Y Series Merlot.
The smell and taste of the Yalumba The Y series Merlot
When pouring this red wine, the beautiful crimson color immediately catches the eye. The delightful aroma of this Yalumba is immediately released. Very pleasant aromas of ripe black fruit, dark chocolate, and hints of dried fruit like plums. The taste is incredibly pleasant. Unlike other Merlots, this red wine has silky soft tones as well as a good body. Wonderfully round flavors of blackcurrant and cherry are balanced by a hint of bitterness from dark chocolate. The finish has a slight hint of spice, soft tannins, and is endlessly long.
