Maps and location
Rioja is located along the Ebro River in northern Spain and has held DOCa (Denominación de Origen Calificada) status since 1991. The region covers more than 65,000 hectares of vineyards, spread across three autonomous regions: La Rioja, Basque Country (Álava) and Navarre.

The Three Sub-regions
The area is divided into three zones with different altitudes, microclimates, and soil structures:
-
Rioja Alta:

Located at an altitude of 400 to 700 metres, south of the Ebro. The combination of Atlantic winds and calcareous clay and alluvial soils produces wines with high acidity and a long ageing potential. -
Rioja Alavesa:

Located north of the Ebro in the Basque Country. The vineyards are on terraces with calcareous clay. The wines are typically aromatic, with fresh acidity and a medium body. -
Rioja Oriental:

The eastern and lowest part of the area. The climate is warmer and drier (Mediterranean). The iron-rich clay soils are planted with a lot of Garnacha, which yields wines with more alcohol and ripe fruit.
Comparison of the 3 Sub-regions
The Consejo Regulador distinguishes three separate production areas, each with specific climatic and geographical figures:

Legal Ageing Requirements (Red)
The Consejo Regulador sets specific requirements for the minimum time in oak barrels and in bottle:
-
Genérico: No minimum oak ageing required; focus on primary fruit. This will not be indicated on the bottle, however.
-
Crianza: Minimum 24 months ageing, of which at least 12 months in 225-litre oak barrels.
-
Reserva: Minimum 36 months ageing, of which at least 12 months in barrel and a minimum of 6 months in bottle.
-
Gran Reserva: Minimum 60 months ageing, of which at least 24 months in barrel and a minimum of 24 months in bottle.
Oak Ageing and Flavour Profile
The choice of oak largely determines the style of the wine:
-
American oak (Quercus alba): Traditional in Rioja. The wood has coarser pores and releases pronounced aromas of vanilla, dill, coconut, and cedar wood.
-
French oak (Quercus petraea): Widely used by modern wineries. The finer wood gives more subtle spice notes (clove, nutmeg) and tighter tannins.
