Our Review
Diez Siglos Verdejo Barrel Fermented Rueda, Spain
Diez Siglos Verdejo Barrel Fermented is a gourmet Verdejo from Rueda, crafted as one of the bodega's most ambitious wines. The Gran Vino de Rueda designation emphasizes its more serious style: selected old vines, fermentation and aging in oak, full body, and a long finish with fruit, spice, and subtle oak notes.
Vineyards and region
This Verdejo comes from the D.O. Rueda, the classic Spanish region for Verdejo.
Location / Origin: The vineyards are located in Rueda, in the province of Valladolid. This area is known for large temperature differences between day and night, allowing Verdejo to combine ripe fruit and fresh acidity.
Vineyards: For this Barrel Fermented, grapes from old vines are used. These impart more concentration, structure, and depth to the wine.
Soil: The grapes come from stony terraces formed thousands of years ago by the Duero river. These poor, well-draining soils are well-suited for concentrated Verdejo.
Climate & Influences: Long, cold winters and warm days with cool nights ensure healthy grapes, aromatic ripeness, and preservation of freshness.
Vinification and aging
This wine is crafted as a richer, more complex Verdejo with clear gastronomic versatility.
Harvest & Selection: The grapes are carefully selected from older vineyards. This wine is only produced in strong vintage years, limiting production.
Fermentation: The wine is fermented in oak barrels. This gives the Verdejo more structure, breadth, and spicy depth than a classically fresh Rueda.
Aging / Oak Maturation: Aging in oak gives layers of vanilla, yogurt, cedar, and light toast. The oak remains supportive and primarily adds complexity to the fruity and spicy character.
Style: Gran Vino de Rueda here represents a full-bodied, serious Verdejo with more body, length, and depth than the young, directly fruity style from Rueda.
Alcohol Percentage: With 13.5% alcohol, the wine has sufficient fullness, while the fresh acidity provides balance and drinkability.
Grape Composition
This wine is made from Verdejo, Rueda's main white grape.
Verdejo – Rueda: Verdejo gives this wine its combination of citrus, stone fruit, spice, and fresh acidity. Through oak aging, the grape gains extra volume, creaminess, and a long, powerful finish.
Tasting notes and serving suggestions
Straw yellow in the glass, with aromas of apple, lime, peach, fennel, mustard seed, vanilla, yogurt, and cedar. The taste is full, rich, and fruity, with fresh acidity, firm structure, and subtle oak notes that linger beautifully. A powerful Verdejo for the table, with more depth and length than most young Ruedas.
Serving temperature: Serve at 7–9 °C, so that the fresh fruit, spicy notes, and creamy oak influence remain beautifully balanced.
Dishes: Excellent with rich fish dishes, shellfish, gambas al ajillo, charcuterie, pork, creamy chicken dishes, grilled vegetables, or refined dishes with garlic and herbs.
Awards
Silver Medal, Concours Mondial de Bruxelles 2025: The 2023 vintage of Diez Siglos Fermentado en Barrica was awarded silver, with mention of 100% Verdejo and aromas in the fruity and floral direction.
Bronze Decanter: Diez Siglos lists Fermentado en Barrica among recent award-winning wines with a Decanter Bronze distinction.
