Louis Latour Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2020 0.375L Côte de Beaune, Burgundy
Louis Latour Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2020 0.375L is a half-bottle of one of Burgundy's great white icons. This Chardonnay comes from the Corton hill in Aloxe-Corton, where Louis Latour is the largest owner within the appellation, with 10.5 hectares. After the phylloxera crisis, the Latour family chose to replace dead Aligoté and Pinot Noir vines here with Chardonnay, a then-unusual choice that ultimately led to one of Burgundy's most famous white Grand Cru wines. The half-bottle is ideal when you want to enjoy a large glass of white Burgundy with 1 or 2 people without opening an entire bottle.
Vineyards and Region
Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is located on the Corton hill in Aloxe-Corton, in the northern part of the Côte de Beaune.
• Location / Origin: The vineyards are located on an excellent part of the Corton hill. This Grand Cru origin gives Chardonnay its powerful structure, mineral tension, and great aging potential.
• Exposure: The plots have a south-easterly aspect. This ensures the grapes receive plenty of sun, helping them reach full ripeness without losing the wine's fresh foundation.
• Soil: The vines grow on stony limestone. This soil provides drainage, concentration, and the chalky minerality so characteristic of Corton-Charlemagne.
• Vineyard & Harvest: The vines are an average of 30 years old, and the yield is around 40 hl per hectare. The grapes are hand-harvested and picked as late as possible to achieve maximum ripeness.
Grape Composition
This white Grand Cru is made entirely from Chardonnay.
• Chardonnay – Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru: Chardonnay forms the complete base of this wine, giving it its broad structure, ripe fruit core, toasted almond, vanilla, and mineral length. On the Corton hill, the grape gains extra power, depth, and aging potential.
Vinification and Aging
The vinification follows the classic Burgundian approach for great white wines from Maison Louis Latour.
• Fermentation: The wine ferments traditionally in oak barrels and undergoes full malolactic fermentation. This gives the Chardonnay more roundness and texture, while the chalky origin continues to provide fresh tension.
• Aging / Oak Maturation: The wine ages for 8–10 months in oak barrels, 100% of which are new wood. Louis Latour uses French oak barrels from its own cooperage with medium toast, which provides notes of toasted almond, vanilla, brioche, and extra depth.
• Aging Potential: This Corton-Charlemagne has an aging potential of 10–15 years. The combination of Grand Cru concentration, stony limestone, oak aging, and fresh acidity gives the wine a solid foundation for further development.
Tasting Notes and Serving Suggestions
In the glass, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2020 has a pale golden color. The aroma is round and generous, with toasted almond, vanilla, ripe white fruit, and subtle oak notes. The palate is broad and powerful, with integrated oak, mineral tension, and a very long finish.
• Serving Temperature: Serve this Corton-Charlemagne at 12–14 °C, so that the broad structure, toasted almond, vanilla, and mineral freshness combine beautifully.
• Food Pairing: Excellent with shellfish, lobster, foie gras, refined fish dishes, and mature cheeses.

More information about Maison Louis Latour
Maison Louis Latour was founded in 1797 and belongs to Burgundy's historic family-owned houses. Corton-Charlemagne holds a special place within the house, as the family consciously chose Chardonnay here after the phylloxera crisis, in a place where Aligoté and Pinot Noir previously stood. This decision grew into one of Louis Latour's great white signature wines, supported by their own Grand Cru holdings, late harvesting, manual picking, and aging in French oak barrels from their own cooperage.
