Vintage Report

2022 was an excellent year for white Burgundy, characterized by an early and warm growing season that resulted in ripe grapes. The wines from this vintage show a beautiful balance between ripe fruit, concentration, and refreshing acidity, which provides great aging potential.

Louis Latour Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2022 Côte de Beaune, Burgundy

Louis Latour Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2022 is an iconic white Burgundy made from Chardonnay in Aloxe-Corton, originating from one of the most famous Grand Cru slopes of the Côte de Beaune. This wine holds a special place within Maison Louis Latour, as after the phylloxera crisis in the late 19th century, the family decided to replace the dead Aligoté and Pinot Noir vines in this location with Chardonnay. That then unusual decision grew into one of Burgundy's most celebrated white wines. With 10.5 hectares, Louis Latour is today the largest owner within the appellation, and it is precisely this scale that enables strict selection and a recognizable house style.

Vineyards and region

Corton-Charlemagne is located on the Corton hill, in Aloxe-Corton, in the northern part of the Côte de Beaune.

Location / Origin: Louis Latour's Corton-Charlemagne vineyards are situated on an excellent part of the Corton hill. Its location in Aloxe-Corton gives the wine its Grand Cru status within the Côte de Beaune.

Exposure: The vineyards have a south-easterly aspect, ensuring the grapes receive ample sunlight. This helps Chardonnay achieve full ripeness, while the calcareous subsoil gives the wine its fresh, mineral tension.

Soil: The vines grow on stony limestone. This soil provides drainage, concentration, and the chalky minerality so important for great Corton-Charlemagne.

Vineyard & Harvest: The vines are on average 30 years old, and the yield is around 40 hl per hectare. The grapes are hand-harvested and picked as late as possible to achieve maximum ripeness.

Grape composition

This white Grand Cru is made entirely from Chardonnay.

Chardonnay – Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru: Chardonnay forms the complete base here, giving the wine its broad structure, floral aromas, brioche, vanilla, and mineral length. On the Corton hill, the grape develops a powerful, concentrated style with great aging potential.

Vinification and aging

The vinification follows the classic Burgundian approach for great white wines from Maison Louis Latour.

Fermentation: The wine is traditionally fermented in oak barrels and undergoes full malolactic fermentation. This process softens the acidity and gives the wine more roundness, while the calcareous origin continues to provide fresh tension.

Aging / Oak maturation: The wine ages for 8–10 months in oak barrels, 100% of which are new wood. Louis Latour uses French oak barrels from its own cooperage with medium toast, which imparts notes of brioche, vanilla, toast, and additional texture.

Aging potential: This Corton-Charlemagne has an aging potential of 10–15 years. The combination of Grand Cru concentration, calcareous minerality, oak aging, and fresh acidity provides a solid foundation for the wine to develop slowly.

Tasting notes and serving suggestions

In the glass, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2022 has a clear, pale yellow color. The aroma is intense, with toast, honeysuckle, and floral notes, followed by a full, round flavor with brioche and vanilla. The finish is long and lingering with acacia honey and mineral tension.

Serving temperature: Serve this Corton-Charlemagne at 12–14 °C, allowing the full structure, brioche, vanilla, and mineral freshness to harmonize beautifully.

Dishes: Excellent with shellfish, lobster, foie gras, refined fish dishes, and mature cheeses.

Awards

99/100, James Suckling (2022): An exceptionally high score, with additional recognition as number 68 in the Wines of the World Top 100 of 2024 and number 18 in the Top 100 France. The review highlights the combination of citrus, stone fruit, vanilla wood, golden richness, and chalky minerality.

94/100, The World of Fine Wine (2022): Praised for its concentration, fresh tension, ripe fruit, high acidity, and long, energetic finish with great aging potential.

93/100, Wine Enthusiast (2022): Appreciates the floral aroma, red apple peel, toasted almond, jasmine, soft roundness, and stony finish.

93/100, Wine Spectator Insider (2022): Emphasizes the velvety richness, ripe fruit, fresh tension, earthy undertone, and length in the finish.

92/100, Burghound.com (2022): Describes a powerful, compact Corton-Charlemagne with wood, pear, white flowers, fennel, minerality, and clear aging potential.

Burgundy Report, Bill Nanson (2022): A glowing review that particularly highlights the citrus complexity, energy, concentration, and great structure.

4.4 stars, Vivino: With over 2300+ user reviews, this Corton-Charlemagne shows that it is also highly valued among wine lovers.

More information about Maison Louis Latour

Maison Louis Latour was founded in 1797 and is one of the historic family houses of Burgundy. The house remains independent and in the hands of the founding family, with a 50-hectare domaine and the largest collection of Grand Cru vineyards in the Côte d'Or. Corton-Charlemagne is one of the house's great icons, precisely because after the phylloxera crisis, the Latour family chose Chardonnay here, creating a white Grand Cru that has since become inextricably linked with the Louis Latour name.
