Louis Latour Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru En Caradeux 2022 Côte de Beaune, Burgundy
Louis Latour Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru En Caradeux 2022 is a white Burgundy made from Chardonnay grown in a Premier Cru vineyard opposite the famous Corton hill. The vineyard is located halfway up the slope and faces east, allowing the grapes to combine ripeness, tension, and a distinct mineral line. Fermentation and aging in French oak give this Chardonnay extra roundness, toasted almond notes, and length, while the fresh finish keeps the wine refined and lively.
Vineyards and region
Pernand-Vergelesses is located in the Côte de Beaune, just 3 km from Aloxe-Corton.
• Location / Origin: En Caradeux is situated halfway up the Pernand-Vergelesses slope and overlooks the Corton hill. This location gives the wine a distinct Côte de Beaune signature, with tension, refinement, and ripe Chardonnay expression.
• Exposure: The plot has an eastern exposure. This means the grapes mostly catch the milder morning sun, which helps them achieve ripeness without losing fresh acidity.
• Soil: The soil is stony, with marl and flinty limestone in the subsoil. This combination contributes to the wine's mineral tension, structure, and lightly smoky depth.
• Vineyard & Harvest: The vines are on average 25 years old, and the yield is around 40 hl per hectare. The grapes are harvested by hand, allowing for careful fruit selection.
• Appellation: What does Premier Cru mean? In Burgundy, Premier Cru refers to an officially recognized vineyard of higher quality within the appellation. En Caradeux belongs to these superior plots of Pernand-Vergelesses.
Grape Composition
This white Premier Cru is made entirely from Chardonnay.
• Chardonnay – Pernand-Vergelesses Premier Cru: Chardonnay gives this wine its floral power, full mouthfeel, toasted almond, and fresh mineral length. In En Caradeux, the grape gains extra tension from the stony limestone soil and its location opposite Corton.
Vinification and aging
The vinification follows the classic Burgundian approach for white wines with structure and length.
• Fermentation: The wine is traditionally fermented in oak barrels and undergoes full malolactic fermentation. This conversion softens the acidity and gives the Chardonnay more roundness, while maintaining fresh tension.
• Aging / Oak Maturation: The wine ages for 8–10 months in oak barrels, 25% of which are new wood. Louis Latour uses French oak barrels from its own cooperage with medium toast, which provides subtle woody spice, extra texture, and notes of toasted almond.
• Aging Potential: This Pernand-Vergelesses Premier Cru has an aging potential of 5–7 years. The combination of acidity, oak aging, and mineral structure provides the wine with a sufficient foundation to develop further.
Tasting notes and serving suggestions
In the glass, this Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru has a pale yellow color and a powerful aroma. The taste is full, rich, and round, with toasted almond, beautifully integrated wood, and a fresh tension in the finish. The aftertaste is long, balanced, and refined.
• Serving Temperature: Serve this white Burgundy at 12–14 °C, so that the full structure, toasted almond, and mineral freshness combine well.
• Food Pairings: Excellent with shellfish, refined fish dishes, rich fish such as salmon or turbot, poultry with creamy sauce, and soft cheeses.
Awards
• 90/100, Wine Spectator (2022): Praised for lemon curd, white peach, apple, minerality, fresh juiciness, and well-integrated spicy oak notes.
• Burgundy Report, Bill Nanson (2022): Highly rated as a fresh, silky, and stony-finished white Burgundy with a subtle barrel impression and plenty of immediate drinking pleasure.
• 4.0 stars, Vivino: A strong user score for this white Premier Cru Chardonnay from Pernand-Vergelesses.
