The old Chardonnay vineyard of Spier

Founded in 1692, Spier Estate is a special place. For centuries, this winery has been producing cutting-edge wines. The range is exceptionally broad, from accessible white wines to distinctive reds. The Chardonnay grapes for this white wine are grown in various parts of the Cape, each with their own unique characteristics. Grapes grown closer to the sea are fresher than those grown further inland. This varietal allows winemaker Frans Smit to create a perfect Chardonnay blend. The grapes are harvested by hand and pressed separately before the final blend is assembled. A touch of oak is added by aging 5 percent of the wine in new French oak barrels, resulting in a fuller structure and a subtle hint of vanilla.
