Vintage Report

In this wine, the Nagambie Lakes wine region meets the southern Rhône in a traditional blend of Grenache, Shiraz, and Mourvedre. This blend of the three "Rhône Reds" has resulted in a wine with savory, chocolatey aromas and velvety tannins.

Unique wine growing region in Victoria

Victoria's oldest winery is the iconic wine producer Tahbilk. Established in 1860, it cultivates some of Australia's oldest Shiraz vines. The name Tahbilk derives from the Aboriginal word "Tabilk-tabilk," meaning "place of many watering holes." The vineyards are located in a unique subregion of central Victoria, the only Australian wine region where the climate is influenced by inland waterways. The numerous lakes and lagoons in the region, connected by the Goulburn River, have a cooling effect and moderate the average temperature. Nagambie Lakes also boasts unique red sandy loam soils due to their high iron oxide content, which positively impacts grape quality and gives the wines a distinct regional character. The area is primarily known for its old-vine Shiraz and also has plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon. Rhône white varieties also excel, including Viognier, Roussanne, and the age-worthy Marsanne. The grapes are harvested only at peak ripeness, a process determined by regular tasting. The grapes are then transported to the winery, where traditional winemaking takes place.

The smooth fruity taste of Tahbilk Shiraz Mourvedre

The first plantings in Tahbilk were sown from cuttings taken from the Rhône Valley. Shiraz, Grenache, and Mourvedre were brought to the local area and now yield the best harvests in Victoria, resulting in a deeply charismatic wine. As soon as we pour this red blend into the glass, a red berry aroma immediately emerges, complemented by cherry, blackberry, and savory chocolate aromas. The palate is smooth and full of juicy berries and plums, with wild and bitter herbal aromas that pleasantly break through the fruitiness. The finish is long, velvety, and delicate.
