Louis Latour Aloxe-Corton 2020 Côte de Beaune, Burgundy

Louis Latour Aloxe-Corton 2020 is a red Burgundy made from Pinot Noir from Aloxe-Corton, a village at the foot of the famous Corton hill. This appellation is located in the northern part of the Côte de Beaune and is known for wines with more body, depth, and structure than many lighter villages in the area. The combination of 30-year-old vines, limestone, alluvial sand, gravel, and aging in French oak gives this Pinot Noir its classic Burgundian tension, with ripe red fruit, earthy notes, and fine spiciness.

Vineyards and region

Aloxe-Corton is located in the north of the Côte de Beaune, on a stony slope at the foot of the Corton hill.

Location / Origin: Aloxe-Corton is a historic appellation in the Côte de Beaune. The village is situated directly at the Corton hill, one of Burgundy's most famous sites for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Historical name: In 1862, the name of the Corton climat was added to the village name Aloxe. This created Aloxe-Corton, a name that directly refers to the close connection between the village and the Corton hill.

Soil: The vines grow on limestone, alluvial sand, and gravel. This combination ensures good drainage and helps Pinot Noir achieve structure, tension, and refinement.

Vineyard & Harvest: The vines are on average 30 years old, and the yield is around 40 hl per hectare. The grapes are harvested by hand, allowing for careful selection of the delicate Pinot Noir fruit.

Grape composition

This Aloxe-Corton is made entirely from Pinot Noir.

Pinot Noir – Aloxe-Corton: Pinot Noir gives this wine its red fruit, refined tannins, and earthy Burgundian depth. In Aloxe-Corton, the grape often gains more firmness and spiciness than in more supple villages of the Côte de Beaune, while maintaining the elegant structure of Pinot Noir.

Vinification and aging

The vinification follows the classic Burgundian approach of Maison Louis Latour.

Fermentation: The wine is traditionally fermented in open vats. This method helps extract color, aroma, and structure from the Pinot Noir skins, while preserving the delicate side of the grape.

Aging / Oak aging: The wine ages for 10–12 months in oak barrels, 15% of which are new wood. Louis Latour uses French oak barrels from its own cooperage with medium toast, which provides subtle spiciness, extra roundness, and more depth.

Aging potential: This Aloxe-Corton has an aging potential of 6–8 years. This allows the wine to develop more earthy notes, spiciness, and softness in addition to its fruity core.

Tasting notes and serving suggestions

In the glass, this Aloxe-Corton opens with red and dark fruit, fine earthy notes, and a slight spiciness from the oak. The palate is broad and structured, with fresh tension, refined tannins, and a classic Burgundian length. The finish remains elegant, subtly spicy, and beautifully balanced.

Serving temperature: Serve this Aloxe-Corton at 14–15 °C, so that the fruit, spiciness, and refined tannins come together well.

Food pairing: Excellent with coq au vin, pan-seared steak, red meat, poultry with gravy, mushrooms, and aged cheeses.

More information about Maison Louis Latour

The house remains independent and in the hands of the founding family, with Aloxe-Corton being one of the most important places in the history of the domaine. The in-house cooperage plays an important role, as Louis Latour makes its own French oak barrels and tailors them to the elegant, terroir-driven style of the house.
